K3B, It will rock your optical media.

So as I said, I'm working on K3B icons set, wen all of the icons are done we plan to do a usability study over them so I can test one doubt I have about action icons and context...

Any way here goes some of today's work on the media icons.

Wow great stuff, keep on the good work! :)

I think that looks great.
There is only one thing I don't like about it: the green note.
I think the green note is one of the worst parts of oxygen - please re-do it! You can do better!

Love Bluray disc!

awesome!

Good stuff! I only suggest you to make blu-ray logo bigger, taking pretty much the whole vertical space on the bottom (exactly where it is but bigger), so it could be seen in lower sizes than just the biggest (just by sight, I suppose the top right one would have the logo with the left one's size).

@J. Janz color counts aswell ;)

Looks fantastic!
J. Janz said…
@Pinheiro Sure, but (speaking of usability - in which I'll put accessibility in) not everyone sees (all) colors (would say a close friend of mine - by being himself an example) ;-)

Why only have a logo on the Blu-Ray? Why not have DVD and CD-R/RW logos?

For that matter, can you use the blu-ray logo in a free as in speech program? Will it cause lisencing problems?

The blu-ray disc logo looks trademarked.

@Pinheiro I also agree with previous Anonymous about logos for CDs, DVDs, ...

However, I don't know about trademark (in any of those cases) either ...

"Why only have a logo on the Blu-Ray? Why not have DVD and CD-R/RW logos?"

havent done DVD yet, and im goning to use the dvd logo. im not going to do CD-R CD+R CD+RW CD-RW its all burnable cd's

about blu-ray I think its fair use and the fact that I puted ut there is in the best interest of the blu-ray itself... if I remove it I wont put any text there, as descreptive text is a no go in icons.

Great icons, but I don't know if the BD logo doesn't infringe any trade marks.

Ok im contacting the Blu-ray Disc Association License Office. So we can Use the logo, or not... its theyr loss any way....

I literally adore your works!Infact I've proposed on kde brainstorm and and bug.kde.org too to have a wallpapers and themes "kde designers" official source for Knewstuff...Anyway,i like very much this icons but for me blue ray disk is too blue...I'd prefered a lighter blue
J. Janz said…
@Pinheiro Well, please consider using all of those logos bigger, as I suggested, so that for smaller icons (and note I haven't even mentioned the smallest) we have information other than just the color (btw, a good idea for extra information - but *extra* information).

That aside, I have to say that those disks look really good (very realistic - I like this kind of icons, reason I like oxygen icons so much)! Thank you and keep up that good work.
Pinheiro said…
OK been reading on the logos issues, the usage we want to emply here is clearly fair use, but that concept seems to be a U.S. comcept so im emailling the DVd logo people aswell to get autorization to use it...

What's the difference between the silver and gold icons in the program?

If you havn't given them a meaning, I think of CD with the silver and DVD with the gold :-). Maybe lavendar for CD-RW, light green for DVD+/-RW.

i dont really use kde, but i do really like your work. Thanks!

How about an icon for blank discs?
Dread Knight said…
Very please: make all small icons for oxygen better defined! They're sort of faded... no good margins and such defined; cd's for example lack the center plastic area over a white background, not cool and the outer margin is not dark enough compared to bigger versions.
Pascal said…
I think you should get rid of either the yellow or the silver disk. To me there is absolutly no difference between them, and there are also colorblind people out there.
trueg said…
@pascal: actually it makes sense, silver is for read-only media, golden for writable media. So, please leave them in. I will use them.
@pinheiro: great work, love the blu-ray icon.

Please add a "RW" label to the golden disk, since not everyone knows this is a RW disk.
Pinheiro said…
@Dread Knight.... I do my best, not as simple as you might think, small stuf with extremly thik borders look very pixelated, wich is bad and round objects have several antyallasing problems.

Have you experience in Icon design?
Anonymous said…
@cumulus: I don't think this is a good idea, since unfortunately the "RW" label is used for CD-R and DVD(+|-)R as well.
Kyashan said…
Did you changed the blu-ray icon perhaps???Before it was too blue...now has is good!Am I drunked??:)
Pinheiro said…
@Kyashan nope maybe diferent screens? there are some screens out there that over do blue a bit.
Brandon said…
great work, the blu-ray icon is amazing
Dread Knight said…
@pinheiro not as much as much as you do; just saying the small icons need a touch of tango, a boost in color and outlines.. because tango icons read just well and it's more likely you'll get to see small and medium icons most of the time.
Pinheiro said…
@Dread Knight and oxygen is not tango.
Tango is tango oxygen is Oxygen.
Tango goes for more pastel orange colors and a carton look (in small sizes) (mango is prety cool) (Carton in tango sytle not as crystal carton)
Oxygen tries to be more realistic still trying to be recognisable in small sizes...

In a way we play in the edge of the blade, not to cartunish not umpreceptible.
