The air we see...

Today the great Marco Committed air into svn.

Let me just tell you a bit about air, air is a direct descendant of the air wallpaper, I made the first sketch of it the same day I made the wallpaper, and it tries to make the people that found the Oxygen theme "to black" happy. There is no one fits all design, and hopefully with air we can make a wider spectrum of people love KDE. ( in the future I think we can still make a couple more themes)
Its still we hope coherent, there are a lot of small details that are shared with oxygen both qt theme as plasma theme. That gives it a feeling of belonging as part of the same experience.
We introduced a brand new element in plasma theming, a cropped background the is placed on the plasmoid canvas, (you will see this in the future taken to new heights as it opens a fantasist new set of opportunities to designers).
Its transparent, people love transparent stuff :) (we did some effort to avoid contrast issues, but with certain wallpapers there could be a bit of a problem, nothing much dough...(you still have oxygen theme that is very contrasted)).

We try in KDE 4.3 introduced a new way of branding KDE, were more than the KDE brand we try to share an experience, "the KDE experience" , that you can enjoy in your distribution... And work as already began with some major distributions were we are working together to create that experience for you, and maintaining mostly intact the branding of your distribution.... Its working pretty well so far...

"There is no one fits all design"

This is true, however a thought I had while reading it was... KDE3.5 had a blending option to tint the desktop wallpaper. Would it be possible to enable a theme option that would allow you to do the same with (probably light colored) themes.

That way the user could take take the beauty of Air and customize it (a little) to their tastes.

As an added bonus, it may be helpful to the branding issue I've been reading about on the Planet.

In my opinion these circles are irritating/distracting the user.
I generelly like the idea, but they could be less intrusive.

Anyway I like air more than oxygen. ;)

I would agree that circles are a bit distracting. Maybe if you would blur them a bit, similar to the bubbles in the back?

Excellent! Great job!
But I like the previous version (sunken task items) better than the current.

Looks stunning! Great work, want to try it out!

A little less contrast for those circles would be nice. Or maybe make them blurry. ATM the text is quite hard to read; especially for those without eagle eyes. :-)

Great work Pinheiro!

I just love Air but on my work computer, I use Cream (from kde-look). It is just simple and great, it would be nice to have it included in the official release (or a theme inspired by it)

And thanks to all the Oxygen Team :)

Plase, enable an option to disable the white circles. They are difficulting the read.
Pinheiro said…
@people not wanting the circles? Juts go in the svg file and remove them, for the ones that want them blurred..... you can go to the svg and replace it by an embedded png dough it wont be a nice small image...

I think you should focus on the widget style and windeco more.

I'd like to see some border-less and translucent windeco, similar to the one in Windows Aero.

Like this:

The gray one is not as pretty anymore...

I think the gray one is ok, but more choices is good :).

Any window decoration can be translucent right now. You can set that on the Desktop Effects options.

Hi Nuno.

Great work! the air theme is quite impressive.

The only problem I can see in the image is the dolphin (or kde apps in general) look and feel.

In your mockups the feel more solid with a more visual gradient:

http://nuno-icons.com/images/estilo/new%20style%20big%20small%20window.png

Can you please do something about it?

Thank you and all the KDE team and looking forward for the final release of KDE 4.3!

What the fuck is this?

The normal way to distinguish the hour hand from the minute hand on an analogue clock is "long" and "short", not "fat" and thin".

I like the general impression of Air but if Plasma keep is making these fundamental mistakes you'll keep losing your remaining supporters.

I keep hoping the KDE 4 project will prove me wrong and it never does.

@fex the way plasma theming works quinda does that... you can make it beter by reducing the size of the pannel I do that.

@Anonymous its is bowth longer and thiner. And that type of argumentative spech only makes us wanna stop... please be kind we do this for fun so help us make it a fun experience.

I like the new air idea - no really! But I think the wallpaper is too boring. You've got to do something with this. There is a lot of good abstract wallpapers that can be in Air future theme. The default one is just burned out... Overall desktop looks more 3D than 2D (I know - "3D" - but perspective is very readable for ex. the widgets edges are milk-glass - beautiful). The wallpaper is completely 2D. I think too that all of work is directed to be suitable with the Air wallpaper.
I don't want too, that KDE brand will be recognizable only with this such as element. Wherever you look: "Air" wallpaper. The idea is clear I know - merge simple objects with some good prepared gradients - the wall is ready.
The life of it I think is done. I thought next release of the KDE will have another, even improved, but another one wallpaper such as we could admire from v4.0 till v4.2. Unpleasant surprise for me with 4.3... Breathe people but you must be more innovative Pinheiro if you want to keep this slogan.

@Anonymous there is only a few of us, and redefining our brand every 6 months is killing the brand. We moved into 1 year cycles instead of 6 months, for people that work on svn and bleeding edge KDE its getting old, about 8 months, but for people that use normal KDE distros its only 2 months... how can we build a brand value if what is the perceived brand experience only is always changing??? and the one that you get on your distro does not match the one we use on our marketing material???

There is a visible difference in length+width between the hour / min hand.

However this may show an accessibility flaw if the functionally blind can not see this.

This difference may need to be greater? Is this what you were trying to say?

I am sure this is not the biggest issue. I am also sure people are getting 'lost' through these 'mistakes'

Keep up the good work!
Anonymous said…
@Pinheiro Just wanted to say you're doing great work. The KDE4 theme is probably the nicest looking thing I've seen come out of the open source world. In the past default themes were always an eyesore, but now I'm having trouble finding a theme that tops Oxygen/Air. Keep up the good work and don't let the anonymous posters get to you.

If they're so disappointed by KDE4's art direction they should work on changing it, rather than complaining.
Pinheiro said…
@Anonymous I just wish people would realize we try to do our best, and we don't have a multi million dollar company paying us for experiments we do the best we can with the people we have, wen opinions on a given subject are contradictory with one side pulling to one direction and another pulling the other way we have to trust our instincts and beliefs,if we are wrong we will fix it, and we wrong all the time, but we hope to be right most of the that time...

Also we can't deliver the perfect desktop today, because there is no such thing, what we can do is to create the desktop we believe fits the needs of more people.

Although it could've been phrased slightly more diplomatically, I agree with the comment about the length of the hour hand.

It's not immediately obvious to me as to whether the time in the screenshot is 9:10 or 1:45. You shouldn't have to think at all when looking at a clock!

Other than that it's great - I've been using the Air theme since it was born and this is the only major issue I've had with it.
Anonymous said…
This theme is already great. I think there's no need to make another one for the next release. Subtle changes for this theme would be okay enough if there's still room for improvement. Focus should shift to widget theme because it's terribly unpolished IMO.

Great work, as always.

Changing all the default artwork every 6 months doesn't make any sense at all, it's too much work and as you said it may even go against the brand you are trying to build.

Air and Oxygen make for some really nice default themes, a white one and a darkish one, besides them there are a lot of other really nice plasma themes that are packaged in the default install. But oxygen is more than just a plasma theme and you also have work to do in the windeco, widget style, icons,...

What I'm trying to say is that we realize how much work you are investing in this and that you have done a great job so far. If a multidollar company like microsoft can stick to the same artwork for years and years it is silly to ask KDE to change it all every 6 months.

Thanks for all your work, and please keep surprising us with you awesome designs

I hope you guys still work on Oxygen Plasma Theme. The info icon in the systray really looks out of place with its gradient background compared to the other icons' black background.
gipszjakab said…
Please check the theme without compositing. While in some places (e. g. Folderview, edge of the clock) transparency works well, in other places (panel, center of the clock) some default light color is used and it seems to me that I cannot even change it.
Anonymous said…
I don't think the clock is too difficult to read, but I don't like the borders too much, I think you should take more ideas from the Glassified plasma theme.
Anonymous said…
Please don't remove the Oxygem theme from the KDE.

There are many people that still likes Oxygen, please continue to improve it.

The kmix icon also needs more improvement, some sharper icon for kmix would be nice. The current kmix icon doesn't look very polished.

Thanks for your great work. Air looks hot!
Anonymous said…
"Air is beautiful & awesome"

Aure you joking? KDE 4.3 was the most flexime and beautiful desktop... until now.

Today I got forced to use Air as default theme in an Ubuntu's repository (nightly builds). Every wallpaper with black color does unusable the major part of widgets that has text instead of buttons, like the Trash icon, Weather plasmoid, folder views and 3º party widgets. Only a few widgets are able to change the text colors but... every time that you changes a wallpaper looks a nightmare to change the text color of every widget (if it can, if not you are fuc*ed). How can be this fault a good theme feature? wallpapers should not affect a Theme desktop, if is very affected it (theme) can't be good.

Excessive white Panels looks horrible in Task manager and Systray widgets.

And what happens when texts in widgets looks horrible with very white or very dark wallpapers? If a choose white text I can't read them because the background is excessive white but if I choose a black or dark colour text it looks horrible because is hard to read...

All this... is possible that the Air theme only has been tested with the default Air wallpaper?

Only I liked how looks the Analog clock widget when Air theme is selected, nothing more :S

Air by default in KDE 4.3 instead of Oxygen is an error...
Pinheiro said…
@Anonymous and thats the reason we will still ship oxygen... you have a choice.

Pleeeease, change that boring systray icon. It's really old and sucks.
If it's possible change that, also with you're master channell icon.

Ps. Air rocks!!!!
Chiel82 said…
In contrast to Oxygen, the Air theme makes the text on the desktop very badly readable if you use a dark background. I prefer a theme with white text on the desktop as Default. Air is very limited in my expression in this sense. On a dark background (for instance the one with the green leafs) there is a bright white with letters that blend with the background.

Oxygen looks readable in most conditions and is therefore more flexible.

But still, nice work, I am only suggesting this to improve things even more!

I completely like the new air theme (tried kde4.3rc2) except for these two things:
1) the minimize, maximize, close, etc window decorations have their borders a bit too pronounced compared to the rest of the theme. (the oxygen theme had them too hard to spot, while these are too obvious, something in between would make it ideal)
2) the inactive applications on the taskbar have the text color too close to the background and can be hard to read if ambient light is powefull.

Other than those observations I totally like the new theme.
Anonymous said…
The KDE AIR theme looks OK for bright wallpapers and desktop colors but I prefer dark wallpapers/dark theme and Oxygen met my needs in 100%. It was a bit surprise for me when I've upgraded from KDE 4.3 Beta 2 to RC1 and I saw AIR on my desktop. I've tried to get used to it but after few days I've gived up and changed theme to Oxygen for all desktop computers which I use (at home and at work).

I agree w/ having issues w/ dark backgrounds. I too prefer to use light text on dark backgrounds. I can see much better that way.
The default option should be one that works with either light or dark backgrounds. Or the ability to change the intensity or color of that light gray color would be good.
