2 wallpapers for fun!

So after working for the past days only on icons today I decided to post 2 wallpapers cause there is more to oxygen than icons, much more....
So here they go....
The first one is a wallpaper I worked wen trying to come up with ideas for the media desktop activity in plasma. Works pretty well for media content. 1600x1200



The second one is a colored version of air in more pastel/green tones I can make it in pretty much any color you might want so.... yeah just need to ask.

Hope you guys like it.

P.S. the feedback from last blog post about the ecosystem gave me a lot of ideas that I will probably make a poll for the best ones just after the current poll is dead. so 2 days for cliking those links in the side.

The second wallpaper is particularly nice. No offence but I was a bit sick of blue by now. Green is a real breath of fresh air. :)

I was gonna say awesome, but then I realized the first one makes my eyes cry on an LCD screen.

See, the contrast transition between the darker lines on the bottom-left portion to the lighter lines on the top-right portion is pretty close to what I see when I look at an LCD screen (typically laptop) from the wrong angle.

As a result, it reflexively want to move to get the better angle... but I can't. Hence the eye-watering... A pity, it looked nice in the scaled-down version, where I hadn't noticed the darker lines.

I wonder how it would be without the contrast switch: have the light lines fade to background instead of becoming darker.

That's the problem with dark gray gradient.

How about adding an alpha channel to background number two and letting the user chose the color by setting the background color?
Then everybody gets their own color, no work :-)
And it's a neat feature ;-)

You could release Air's SVG source and then anyone with basic knowledge of Inkscape can change the colors. Or have you already? If so, where can I find it?

I am really proud of you all in the KDE team. You have gotten a lot of tongue lasches during and after the launch of KDE 4.0 but you didn't allow that to distract you and stuck to the plan, a plan that has now materialised.

I am confident that you can blow away OS X. It will not happen overnight but it will. That's thre power of teamwork!
Keep up the powerful work guy and show the world why KDE is the best DE ever!

Does anyone else notice that the wallpapers appear to have color banding? In the darker one, it looks like there is banding in the background, in between the thin lines. I'm not sure if that's intentional.

In the airy one with dots, it looks the gradients are smooth and are a bit chunky. Or is it just the jpeg save quality? Is it just me?

I believe all wallpapers like this sort should be saved in PNG. The first one is already in PNG but it seems to have color banding.

@Anonymous yeah you are correct the frist one is somthing i fight alot with and never quite got it to work its the way inskacpe renders the gradient....
the second.... yeah a png would be beter but I suplied the svg source so ;)

Could you please, please, please make a version of the second wallpaper (the Air one) with the OS X style space colors (purple, black, white)? I'm not a fan of the OS X space wallpaper but I like the colors-though I can't say I don't like the blue...

Nice job by the way. I wish I had some of your talent. What software do you use for these wallpapers?

Today the great Marco Committed air into svn. Let me just tell you a bit about air, air is a direct descendant of the air wallpaper, I made the first sketch of it the same day I made the wallpaper, and it tries to make the people that found the Oxygen theme "to black" happy. Air and KDE 4.3.

Air was the wallpaper we introduced in KDE 4.2, but that is just the beginning of something larger. Air is supposed to be different than what Oxygen is, something that tries to appeal to a user base looking for a more "sexy" experience than Oxygen (yeah I know you are out there :) ), but to still have the capability of merging nicely with what we have now. The first thing we started working on was a Plasma theme. Plasma, with it's immense plasticity and a fantastic coder team, allows us to try to push for new ideas. Another extremely cool thing about Plasma is it's ability to become anything you want it to be. So a user in KDE 4.3 might have a desktop that looks like this, if that is his wish, without having to use external software: (click for fullscreen mode) This is an example of how simple one can make a desktop in the 4.3 Plasma once we all manage to get all of our plans working. I have a question!

Hopefully in the next few days I should have a Usability test that I have been working on with Björn Balazs from apliki.de on the K3B icons in that study I will pose the same question I'm about to pose now. And hopefully a few more options, that will come from the feedback of this post. So the question is...... "Data cd" 1 or 2?.... 1 2 Don't think to hard, just fire the first thing that pops in your mind, that is the best way to judge a icon IMO..also if you have an better idea please share...I will try to include it in the usability test. P.S Ofcourse the numbers will have to be redone for each size and the document as well... Its one source file for each icon. meaning this one = 14 files 7 png's and 7 svgz's.
