Finaly

This post, is short but its about something that started out as something that should be very quick to do, (replacement of the paper in the mime-types), into a complete remake of all of the mime-types this time in all sizes.
Representing something like, +/-244 icons, over 3200 files, many hours of work, this is a work I'm proud to have done, but I hope I don't have to do any time soon.... Overall I'm very pleased with them. And tomorrow, I should start to fix some minor bugs in the set. And get back to action icons doing, applications, etc etc.
The new 4,6 desktop release from KDE is coming in very soon, and we are very happy with all the improvements we made into it.... I hope you all enjoy it as much as we enjoy making it....

Its the news mime type in glorious 16x16 pixels very different from the 256x256

Why "Times" and not "News" in the
Icontext? Is this too obvious?

I also think the word 'Times' could be a bit misleading for that icon, because of the connection with the very common 'Times New Roman' font, and the image of newspaper columns could imply some kind of typesetting or font-related purpose. Not every country has a publication called the ... Times, hence a lot of people might not grasp the context, whereas the word 'news' is probably more internationally understood.

While I might be arguing about the colour of the bikeshed, I have to admit that "Times" seems to be a horrible caption.

It made me think of Times New Roman, not of news.

Sticking to the old principle that icons should obvious and precise yet generic, I would prefer "News" over "Times".

While that will still not help any Chinese users who maybe can't even read our roman letters, it's still the best & most generic choice short of starting to localize icons ;)

Other than that, great work. I do appreciate the effort you are putting into this.

PS: Why is it on the right? Most newspapers have the title left-aligned or centered.

Hopefully in the next few days I should have a Usability test that I have been working on with Björn Balazs from apliki.de on the K3B icons in that study I will pose the same question I'm about to pose now. And hopefully a few more options, that will come from the feedback of this post. So the question is...... "Data cd" 1 or 2?.... 1 2 Don't think to hard, just fire the first thing that pops in your mind, that is the best way to judge a icon IMO..also if you have an better idea please share...I will try to include it in the usability test. P.S Ofcourse the numbers will have to be redone for each size and the document as well... Its one source file for each icon. meaning this one = 14 files 7 png's and 7 svgz's.

Air and KDE 4.3.

Air was the wallpaper we introduced in KDE 4.2, but that is just the beginning of something larger. Air is supposed to be different than what Oxygen is, something that tries to appeal to a user base looking for a more "sexy" experience than Oxygen (yeah I know you are out there :) ), but to still have the capability of merging nicely with what we have now. The first thing we started working on was a Plasma theme. Plasma, with it's immense plasticity and a fantastic coder team, allows us to try to push for new ideas. Another extremely cool thing about Plasma is it's ability to become anything you want it to be. So a user in KDE 4.3 might have a desktop that looks like this, if that is his wish, without having to use external software: (click for fullscreen mode) This is an example of how simple one can make a desktop in the 4.3 Plasma once we all manage to get all of our plans working.
