Looks like a comparison

Has i promised here is a comparison betwin the old play and the new play icon.


Made some improvements to the new one.
Righ now im tempted to use the new one, the blue, but the old one was very sharp and fited beter a oxygen icon set that seams to be fading.
Seams black is not that popular :P

(seams like there is some confusion on witch one is new or old hope the new image helps)

I don't think it's that black is not popular, the new one just looks cooler than the old one. The new one in black would be fine too :) I'm not a big fan of the "dented in" look of the old one.

I like the new one better. Maybe you can try experimenting with combining the sharp-cornered triangle (with the gradients on it).

The second advice would be to alter the new one - to make the inner wave a bit shorter. I hope you understand what I mean.

Am I the only one who thnks that such controls should be as simple as possible?

I mean, why a triangle *inside* a round button, which will in turn fit into a square place?

Maybe it's just me :D

Both look quite nice but I prefer the old one.

I don't like the light half circle in the bottom left corner of the new version.
For me it looks like illumination but the light source of GUI elements is usually in the top left corner.

I prefer the much sharper triangle in the new 32x32 and 16x16 versions though.
I don't like it if the smaller icon sizes look blurry because I only use these small sizes (the only exception is my desktop with 48x48 icons).

Oops, I just realized that the black one is the old version...

So I prefer the new/blue one (and the sharper triangle of the old/black one).

Sorry but I don't like any of those two.

The new one is much too blurry, and the old one has problems with the light source and thus just doesn't look good.

But what really disturbs me, and what someone already mentioned here is:
Why do you need a circle around it? The arrow itself would be _way_ better. Just the arrow, like in Tango iconset for example. This is really essential IMO, you also don't but the folder icon in such a bubble like you do with the play icon.

Sorry, I made the same mistake that another guy, I though the black one was the new.

As I said, I like both, but I prefer the blue one!!

The sharp triangle is much better than the rounded one. The rounded edges is going back to the thing that oxygen was supposed to avoid "Cartoon style" which I personally don't like and there is a thousand cartoon styles out there already. P.S. please sort out that camera in oxygen - that is back to cartoon style and also makes the device look out of shape.

I think the new one is too similar to the current forward button (see http://websvn.kde.org/*checkout*/trunk/playground/artwork/Oxygen/theme/svg/actions/forward.svg ).

Frankly I don't understand why there are still fundamental changes wrt really prominent action icons. The navigation icons e.g. have undergone so many changes from the brave concept of combining a ball with a triangle to the very reasonable green <- -> arrow-buttons to now circled tailless arrows (repeating that crystal-icon mistake again) that are so difficult to distinguish...

I think the reason I don't like the blue one is that it uses about three different hues of blue. Which just looks wrong.

Incidentally that's also the reason why I can't stand any of the vista artwork. Too much stuff like that.

I prefer the black icon, but the "dented" effect created by the curve in the lower left doesn't make visual sense to me, it breaks the illusion of depth.

Hopefully in the next few days I should have a Usability test that I have been working on with Björn Balazs from apliki.de on the K3B icons in that study I will pose the same question I'm about to pose now. And hopefully a few more options, that will come from the feedback of this post. So the question is...... "Data cd" 1 or 2?.... 1 2 Don't think to hard, just fire the first thing that pops in your mind, that is the best way to judge a icon IMO..also if you have an better idea please share...I will try to include it in the usability test. Air and KDE 4.3.

Air was the wallpaper we introduced in KDE 4.2, but that is just the beginning of something larger. Air is supposed to be different than what Oxygen is, something that tries to appeal to a user base looking for a more "sexy" experience than Oxygen (yeah I know you are out there :) ), but to still have the capability of merging nicely with what we have now. The first thing we started working on was a Plasma theme. Plasma, with it's immense plasticity and a fantastic coder team, allows us to try to push for new ideas. Another extremely cool thing about Plasma is it's ability to become anything you want it to be.
